A little bit about me
Hello, my name is Betty Skeet and I am a qualified Play Therapist. I obtained my Postgraduate Diploma in Play Therapy in September 2008 from the University of Strathclyde and the Notre Dame Centre in Glasgow. I follow the Ethical Principles and Guidelines of the British Association of Play Therapists.
My background is in Anthropology, and I have always been interested in the dynamics of play, whether structured or not, with a purpose or free to see where it takes us. I have enjoyed playing as a participant and as an observer. I have been involved in play work as a parent/carer/facilitator for my son and other children with special needs, as a parent helper and volunteer in a Nursery and in Primary schools. I have worked as a Play Leader for a local Play Group, as a Relief Play Worker and Project Worker for a Family Project (run by Action for Children).
As a founder member of our local Toy Library I had the chance to familiarize myself with different materials and equipment and forms of presenting them, creating play/craft packs, planning and delivering play sessions, receiving feedback from our young customers and their parents. More recently I have used my skills and knowledge while supporting families through Quarriers Child Care Project and practicing Non-Directive Play Therapy while in placement with CAMHS and in two primary schools. I have worked supporting families with the Quarriers Childcare Project and at present I am working as a Therapeutic Residential Childcare Worker.
I was born in San Jose, Costa Rica into an extended Latino american family and have travelled and lived in many different countries since age 11. My experiences in Ecuador, Mexico, USA, Spain and Israel have given me an interest in other cultures and fuelled my curiousity about play in relation to culture, adaptation and child development. I have been living in the U.K. since 1992.
